February is African American History Month!

African American History Month originated in 1926 as Negro History Week.   While pursuing his education, including a Ph. D. from Harvard, Dr. Carter G. Woodson noticed that African American history was ignored or misconstrued greatly in textbooks.   ”[He]chose the second week of February for Negro History Week because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the black American population, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.”   He used the week to call attention to the great contributions African American had made to our society. – The History of Black History from Infoplease Almanac online.
